I had to change my beliefs…
Two of the hardest things in my life were admitting that I failed and that I needed help.
It all just kind of happened. One day, I realized how much time I was wasting cleaning dish after dish, picking up clothes and shoes, and don't even get me started on all the times I spent organizing. Jeezus.
For a long time, I accepted that this was a part of life. We go to work, and we come home, and we work some more. That's how my mom did it. That's how my sisters do it. That's how every single person I know and TV moms do it. Why was I any different?
But man did I freaking hate it. I hated knowing that despite all of my efforts my home and life were always going to be chaotic. I would continue stumbling through my apartment, feeling like a big pile of poo, and praying for someone to fix it. Fairy Godmother where you at?
I was washing dishes for the gazillionth time, and I just couldn't believe how many dishes were in the sink. It was only Chris and me living in our 320 square foot apartment in Australia. How in three days did we manage to use every piece of silverware; every single cup and mason jar, and all of the damn plates and saucers?
I mean why do we need 40 pieces of silverware for two people?
In a very manic and tearful state, I had enough. I looked around and asked how I got here? I looked around and began asking the same stuff with my clothes, shoes, and nicknacks. Why did I need so much? Why was I spending so much time cleaning? Why couldn't I control anything? Why wasn't I happy?
Holy Cannoli did that last question hit me like a ton of bricks.
WHY WASN’T I HAPPY?
Because I was spending ALL time doing things that didn't make me happy.
Believing the only way to feel successful was by having the latest and greatest of technology, clothes, and furniture.
Accepting a world where we shame and label people, including myself?
100% out of choice and because we were moving back to the US, we decluttered. With every piece I let go, the weight lifted off my shoulders.
