Self-Care Habits to Support Your Healing
When you instill practical and much needed self-care habits into your daily life, they can be your secret weapon in reclaiming your health and living a fulfilling life.
Understanding Self-Care
Self-care is more than just bubble baths and face masks (although those can be great too!). It's about intentionally nurturing your mind, body, and soul on a regular basis. By incorporating self-care habits into your routine, you're giving yourself the love and attention you deserve, which in turn supports your healing journey. So, let's prioritize self-care and give ourselves the gift of self-love!
Identifying the Right Self-Care Habits
Just like each of us is beautifully unique, our self-care habits should be too. It's all about finding what works best for you. This might require some trial and error, but figuring out what soothes your soul will get you through the uncomfortable side effects of healing. Here are a few examples of self-care activities that can promote healing.
Regular exercise and movement
Engaging in regular physical activity can have numerous positive effects on both our mental and physical well-being. From taking a leisurely stroll amidst nature's beauty to participating in a rejuvenating yoga session, these activities promote the secretion of endorphins, effectively elevating our mood, and facilitating the release of built-up tension and stress which is optimal for healing.
I can’t stress enough that the best exercises for healing don’t need to be high impact interval training or something along those lines. It can be as simple as stretching or trying a something new like aerial yoga!
Mindfulness and meditation practices
Incorporating mindfulness and meditation into your daily routine can bring numerous benefits to your overall well-being. Set aside a few moments each day to deliberately quiet your mind, take deep breaths, and fully immerse yourself in the present moment. By cultivating this practice, you can enhance your mental clarity, reduce stress, and foster a deeper connection with yourself and the world around you. Give yourself the gift of these few moments each day to promote a sense of calm and balance in your life.
If you’re worried that meditation is only beneficial after hours of silence, I recommend trying the one-minute rule if you can’t seem to find time in your busy day.
Nourishing the body with a balanced diet.
To fully optimize the functionality and overall well-being of your body, it is highly recommended to diligently nourish it with a rich variety of wholesome and nutrient-dense foods. These nutrient-rich foods possess the remarkable ability to provide the necessary sustenance and fuel required for your body to not only survive but flourish and prosper in all aspects of life.
The Bean Protocol has been extremely helpful in my healing - not only in increasing my fiber intake, but for balancing my hormones.
Quality sleep and rest
It is of utmost importance to prioritize sleep during the night in order to ensure optimal well-being and productivity. And you really have to do whatever it takes to find the time to get amazing sleep. The best tips for sleeping starts with making the room comfortable to you! But once you find what works, you’ll feel rejuvenated and be able to replenish your energy levels, which sill improve your physical and mental health.
Engaging in creative outlets or hobbies.
Give yourself the freedom to express your creativity, whether it be through the strokes of a paintbrush on a canvas, writing in a journal, dancing to your favorite tunes, or any other activity that ignites a sense of joy within you.
Spending time with friends, family, or community
Establishing meaningful connections with your loved ones possesses the potential to contribute towards the process of restoring your physical well-being. According to the Blue Zone Series on Netflix, it’s one of the most important factors in living long happy lives - especially when you’re able to laugh with them.
Remember, these are just a few examples. Feel free to experiment and find what resonates with you!
Creating a Self-Care Routine
Establishing a consistent self-care routine for lasting benefits.
Now that you have a few self-care habits in mind, it's time to create a routine that works for you. Here are a few tips to help you get started:
Prioritize self-care by scheduling dedicated time for it.
Treat self-care like any other important appointment in your calendar. You should never be the last on your list, instead you should be your priority in your life.
Start small and gradually build up the routine.
Begin with one or two self-care activities and slowly add more as you feel comfortable. If you try to overload and completely rearrange your life so you can incorporate self-care can be overwhelming and you may stop too soon.
Focus on self-care activities that bring joy and relaxation.
It’s easy to “should” ourselves into activities that don’t satiate our soul. Make a promise to yourself that at least once a day you’ll do something that warms your heart and makes you feel good. You deserve it - especially while you’re healing.
Remember, self-discipline and commitment are key to maintaining your self-care routine. You deserve this time for yourself, so make it a non-negotiable part of your day!
Overcoming Self-Care Barriers
Practical solutions for common obstacles.
We understand that life can get busy and throw obstacles in our path to self-care. Here are a few practical solutions to overcome common barriers:
Lack of time and busy schedules
Prioritize self-care by managing your time effectively and making it a non-negotiable part of your day. Start with one minute self-care habits, and build up gradually. Review your schedule and see where that are gaps in your schedule so you can fill up your cup.
Feeling guilty or selfish for prioritizing personal needs
Reframe your mindset around self-care, recognizing that taking care of yourself allows you to show up more fully for others. It’s okay to be selfish with your time and energy. Refueling leads to so many more great times and possibilities.
Financial constraints
Explore affordable or free self-care options, such as practicing gratitude, taking a walk in nature, or indulging in a DIY spa day at home.
Remember, self-care doesn't have to be expensive or time-consuming. It's about finding what works for you within your current circumstances.

As you progress through your healing journey, your self-care habits may evolve. Here are a few examples of self-care practices suitable for different stages:

Focus on gentle self-care activities that promote relaxation and provide comfort. One of my favorite self-care habits is sleeping! Getting ready for bed, showering, washing my face, incorporating some face yoga, and snuggling into bed with a good book is a recipe for deep restorative and healing sleep.
